ESP-6-10-Rod-Review

Many techniques, one rod.

I have been a fan of the ESP rod series by 6th Sense fishing ever since I fished one for the first time. The 6’ 10” model is one of the most versatile rods in that line, so if you are looking for one rod to do many techniques, this might be the rod for you!

01. Specifications and Design Aesthetics

This rod is 6’ 10” long and is rated as a Medium power, with a Fast action. It is rated to throw lures of 1/4 to 5/8 ounces and handle line from 10 to 17 pounds. The ESP series features a custom handle that is made from a special rubberized coated hard composite, which is one of my favorite features. The rubberized handle feels great when fishing all day and keeps its grip when wet. The rod comes equipped with Fuji Alconite guides, custom hook keeper, and custom 6th Sense branded lock nut.

02. Extremely Versatile, the Bank Fisherman’s Friend

Even though this rod is rated as a Medium power rod with a Fast action, it bends very deep into the blank which is what makes it highly versatile. Since the rod bends deep into the blank, I feel very comfortable throwing treble hook baits knowing that the fish won’t throw my lure once hooked. Since it is a short rod I like to use it for shallow water and twitching techniques. I use this rod for shallow running crankbaits, as well as jerkbaits and walking top water lures. The tip of the rod is still fast enough to throw small single hook baits like a finesse jig, light or weightless texas rig, downsized spinnerbait, and smaller chatterbait. It is because of this versatility that I reach for this rod anytime I am using a limited amount of rods, like when I am walking the bank, or hitting the lake in a kayak.

03. Sensitivity

The sensitivity on this rod is good, but do not expect this rod to be extremely sensitive like the Sensory or Unicorn series that 6th Sense also offers. However, after using this rod for some time, I do believe it is highly sensitive for the price category that it is in, so you will be very happy with this rod. The rubberized handle seems to transmit the feeling from the rod blank very well, which adds to the overall sensitivity. The reel seat also features an exposed blank, so that your hand makes direct contact with the rod. I mostly use this rod for moving treble hook baits where sensitivity is not extremely important. However, for those techniques I can definitely still feel a squarebill deflecting off of cover or a bass hitting a jerkbait on the pause.
